The mayor of Milan – Giuseppe Sala – has once against commented on the situation surrounding the future of San Siro.

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni spoke to ANSA last week and essentially confirmed that the plan is to go full steam ahead with a new stadium.

It is believed that two firms are competing to secure the project of constructing the new stadium; namely American giant Populous and Italian firm Manica-Cmr.

Thursday’s edition of il Corriere di Milano – as cited by MilanNews.it – provided a peek at the designs going head-to-head, describing it as a ‘cathedral versus wedding rings’.

Milan and Inter had been offered the chance to buy the current San Siro for €70m, but a report from Calcio e Finanza revealed the main reason that the two clubs agreed to reject the offer.

The mayor though will not give up on that dream, as he spoke to reporters at the conference for the 80th anniversary of the Niguarda Hospital in Milan.

“To say ‘let’s build a new stadium and leave San Siro there’ – this is wrong in my opinion,” Sala said, as per Calcio e Finanza.

“Imagine the sadness of San Siro empty with lights, attention and all the visibility on the other stadium that is a hundred meters away. This is not possible.

“I keep reiterating that for me the first solution is to work on the San Siro, but I can’t not listen to the teams.

“Now the process starts, I am pleased that we will also move towards good transparency with respect to citizenship. however, football and the San Siro are such delicate issues that the people must be involved.”
